Supported Independent Living
Independence without removing choice. SIL at Banksia Care is built around the person: their goals, their routines, their home and what genuine independence actually looks like for them.
What is SIL
Living independently, with the right support alongside.
Supported Independent Living is an NDIS-funded support that provides assistance to participants who need help with daily tasks in their home. It is designed for individuals who require regular support to live as independently as possible.
At Banksia Care, SIL is not a roster of tasks. It is a considered arrangement built around the participant: their daily rhythms, their goals, their communication, their preferences and the level of support that is actually appropriate for them.
The objective is not to do things for participants. It is to support each individual to do things for themselves, at a pace and in a way that makes sense for them.
Support may include
- Assistance with daily routines and personal care, including continence support, nappies and continence aids provided based on individual needs
- Showering and hygiene support in fully accessible, wheelchair-friendly bathrooms and disability-specific toileting facilities on site
- Building practical daily living skills and independence
- Support with household tasks, meal preparation and cooking
- Goal development and working towards individual priorities
- Safety planning and risk management within the home environment
- Community access and participation as part of daily life
- Skill-building at a pace that suits the participant
- Support with appointments, transport and everyday errands
Support ratios
Based on the person, not a template.
Banksia Care generally operates around 1:1 support, or 1:2 where appropriate. The right ratio depends on the participant's profile, support needs, communication, personal care requirements, behavioural presentation, mobility, medical considerations, sensory needs, risk, the activity and the environment.
Two participants can attend the same activity and need completely different levels of support. Banksia Care will not apply a blanket ratio regardless of individual circumstances.
Important information
SIL is not suitable for every participant, eligibility and suitability depend on individual circumstances and applicable NDIS requirements.
Funding for SIL is assessed separately and requires NDIS approval. Banksia Care does not determine funding eligibility.
Support ratios are based on the individual participant profile, not a standard template.
Banksia Care will be transparent about whether SIL is the appropriate service for a given participant.
